Should the Peugeot 205 come back as a retro electric car?
If there is one classic from the eighties that Peugeot should revive, it is undoubtedly the 205. We are convinced that it would generate a similar enthusiasm as the Renault 5 E-Tech and herald the return of an extraordinary rivalry between the two models ... 40 years later.
Stellantis also has the necessary know-how to produce it at low production costs. These are the Smart Car and CMP platforms (or the future STLA Small modular system) and electric motors with a power output of between 113 and 280 hp, which are already used in other zero-emission cars from the company. Worth mentioning here would be the new Fiat Grande Panda or the Citroën C3, both a good four meters long. By the way, the original 205 was 3.70 meters long.
The sketch illustrating this article is a replica of a modern 205 GTI, and we're really excited because it retains the image of the original model, but has been appropriately modernized. We are sure Peugeot would find many fans for this!
Also: Can you imagine a 205 T16 with 280 hp, front-wheel drive and specific tuning? With the same engine as the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce or the upcoming Lancia Ypsilon HF, which accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds (in the case of the Alfa).
And on request also with the 136 hp mild hybrid gasoline engine, for those who do not want to switch to electric mobility. In order to distance itself from the R5, which has no partially electrified option.
Unfortunately, the lion brand doesn't have a new 205 in mind, even if Renault's Revival formula works perfectly. Luca de Meo's project will continue this year with the new Renault 4 and in 2026 with the future Twingo.
At the moment, Peugeot is relying on its current offer, which is not particularly flashy, in the development of the electric versions (E-208, E-308, E-3008, E-4008 and E-5008). In fact, they are difficult to distinguish from the conventional variants.
If the Renault 5 manages to change the attitude towards the electric car Spain, the other brands should learn the lesson and work on vehicles that are aesthetically exciting. With the 205, Peugeot would undoubtedly have a great opportunity to exploit this potential.
